At Your Pleasure by Meredith Duran

March 2, 2012
Not a DNF but back to the TBR pile.

There must be something wrong with me.  Everyone is giving this book a glowing review and I'm having trouble with it.  I'm not liking the heroine and after the fifth day I couldn't go on.  So, because I have a great respect for Meredith Duran's writing, I'm putting it back into my TBR pile for a later date.  Maybe I'm distracted by all of the books I ordered this month.

On to something lighter.

You aren't the only one. I was so disappointed with this heroine. She was a doormat to her family and only ever challenged the hero, usually when he was trying to help her. It's a shame because Duran is a very talented writer but I just wanted to shake Nora, the heroine throughout the book.

I couldn't get passed about a fifth of the way through the book. The politics and intrigue just didn't interest me and the heroine was insipid.

It's nice to know I'm not alone. After all the wonderful reviews from some of my favorite people, I was wondering what was up with me.

But the consideration of the limits of loyalty in the book proved interesting. All kinds and levels of that supposed virtue from the religious to the political to the personal cropped up. Although Duran writes well and competently, I don't think her style alone would lead me to read her books. In fact, this book contained some indecipherable double negatives and I never did understand the necessity of the several repetitions of the word "incalescent"; heated would do.

Dick: So, you made it through? How fast can you read a book? And, did you like it?

I usually read a book in one evening--about 3 1/2 hours, depending. And I did like the book. I prize loyalty, myself, so perhaps that influenced my reaction. Possible spoiler coming: As the hero and the reader find out later in the book, the heroine has good reasons for both the loyalty she shows to the hero's quarry and the mistrust she shows the hero. I thought Duran handled both that background and the difficult plot well.
But, as I said, I don't find her style particularly great.

Dick: 3 1/2 hours, I'm impressed!! Hey, I like spoilers! I'm one of those people who read endings or I used to before the Nook came along. I haven't given up on this book, it is now in my TBR pile waiting for a fresh start. Love the time period.

I love Duran's writing but I think sometimes the writing gets in the way of the story. This happened with Wicked Becomes You and it just didn't work all that well for me.
